The Fleet's ongoing Weekend Programs are designed to inform the public about science in ways which are striking, accessible and hands-on. Events and talks in the past year have included astronaut appearances, live bats, robots, Australian animals, astronomy authors, undersea explorers and rocket-building classes. New programs are being added all the time, so please check this page frequently!

The Journey to Palomar Preview Screening

Join the Fleet Science Center for a special advance screening of The Journey to Palomar, a documentary that traces George Ellery Hale’s lifelong efforts to build the world’s four largest telescopes, culminating with the Palomar 200-inch Hale Telescope. Following the film, Scott Kardel of Palomar Observatory will discuss Caltech’s next giant telescope, and the filmmakers will be on hand to answer questions. This is one journey you don’t want to miss! This event is free is with paid admission, but tickets are required. Please ask for a free ticket when purchasing gallery admission.

Exhibit Galleries
Visit our newest, most grotesque exhibition “Animal Grossology” and meet Sylvia Branzei, author of the popular Grossology series, as she presents the most disgusting and unpleasant characteristics of the animal kingdom. Get up close and personal with mutant flies, hissing cockroaches, spiders and sour cream & onion crickets! Interact with local scientists to learn about genetic mutations, adaptations and vermicompost. Live observations and hands-on activities will entertain the entire family!
Sylvia Branzei's "Get Buggy" presentations (12:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m.) will be held in the Community Forum and will be followed by a book signing (12:30 p.m. & 2:30 p.m.) in the Theater Lobby by the North Star Science Store. Presentations are free with admission but tickets are required. Please ask for a free ticket when purchasing gallery admission. Members may make advance reservations for the 12:00 p.m. show but must pick up tickets by 11:30 a.m.
