52 Semanas De Ciencia

52 Weeks of Science is a year-long celebration of science right here in Barrio Logan and Logan Heights. More than 56 organizations have come together in the neighborhood to bring you a year full of discovery through fun science events and opportunities every week. Each event is FREE and open to all. From astronomy to zoology and everything in between, 52 Weeks of Science is happening here.

Enjoy hands-on demonstrations and interact with scientists, researchers, engineers and more as they reveal their cutting-edge work. Listen to an author share his book highlighting the journey of a seed, or come and look through telescopes and talk to astronomers about the mysteries of space. Interact with robots or explore spectacularly messy science. The calendar below lists upcoming 52 Weeks of Science events!

The Salk Institute: Part 1 Heart Disease

Listen to a presentation by Reyna Hernandez-Benitez, Ph.D. regarding the medical research that goes into finding a cure for Heart Disease. Learn about the cardiovascular system and what you can do to keep your heart pumping to its fullest potential. Bring the kids to experience a science demonstration courtesy of Kristen Hurst, teacher at Burbank Elementary.

Urban Growth and Maker Hour:
The Science of Hydroponic Farming

Fancy yourself an urban farmer? Join Urban Growth, a San Diego nonprofit dedicated to teaching agriculture in the urban environment, as they share the science behind hydroponic farming. After the presentation, stick around to create a micro-farm for your own home. There is no charge for the presentation, but a $15 materials fee for creating your own hydroponic farm. Please bring your own container for the farm. 

*Although the event is free to attend there is a fee for the take-home micro-farm. The first 20 coupon holders (available at Border X Brewing) with a container May create their own micro-farm to take home for free. After the first 20, there will be a $15 materials fee.  

Containers could be: Plastic containers with lids i.e. recycled protein powder container, Chamba Chai Juice, plastic coffee grounds container, cat litter container, Clorox wipes containers.  Anything that has at least a 3in hole or larger.

Urban Growth y Maker Hour:
La ciencia detrás de la agricultura hidropónica

¿Te imaginas ser un granjero urbano? Acompaña a Urban Growth, una organización sin fines de lucro de San Diego dedicada a enseñar agricultura en el medio urbano, a que te comparta la ciencia que hay detrás de la agricultura hidropónica. Después de la presentación, quédate para crear una micro-granja para tu propio hogar. No hay cargo por la presentación, pero sí una cuota de $15 para cubrir el costo de los materiales para crear tu propia granja hidropónica. Por favor trae tu propio contenedor para tu granja. 

*Aunque la asistencia a este evento es gratuita, habrá un costo de $15 para crear y llevar a casa una micro granja hidropónica. Las primeras 20 personas que se presenten con cupones (disponibles en Border X Brewing) y un recipiente, podrán participar en el taller y crear su propia granja de manera gratuita. Después de los primeros 20, habrá un costo de $15 por persona para cubrir los materiales.

What happens in the brain during Alzheimer's or a cerebral thrombosis? Why do cells not survive? Can science help to avoid the consequences of these diseases? Dr. Blanco-Suárez of the Salk Institute will speak about neurodegeneration and some of the latest research dedicated to finding a solution to these health problems.

Together we can leverage the creative and innovative programs that are happening in the neighborhood to create a community of science for all residents. Partnering together will broaden and expand exciting hands-on science activities and exhibits at schools, libraries, community centers and other gathering places to foster and further connections to science. Logan Heights and Barrio Logan partners are raising awareness of STEM education by bringing an educational science opportunity to the neighborhood every week throughout the year. This collaboration will create rich environments for science enjoyment, teaching and learning.

By establishing collaborative support systems and networks for STEM learning, we can spark budding scientific thinkers of all ages.
