Education Programs and Hands-On Exhibitions
The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s interactive approach to science and technology has introduced millions of children and adults to the wonder and excitement of open-ended exploration, while demystifying topics ranging from biology and chemistry to astronomy and engineering. Hands-on exhibitions such as “Motion Mania: Move Your Mind!” (opened June 20, 2009) are experienced by more than 100,000 school children every year; engaging the curiosity and sparking the imagination of future scientists and engineers.
“Creating Possibilities, Inspiring Tomorrow” will fund entirely new hands-on exhibits for the Fleet Science Center’s permanent collection, major upgrades to the highly-popular “Kid City” exhibition for preschool-age children, and exciting traveling exhibitions such as “Giant Worlds.”
In addition to new exhibits, the Fleet Science Center’s education and outreach programs will also benefit from the campaign, with new resources devoted to the organization’s inquiry-based teacher training programs, public outreach programs and on-site classrooms for visiting school groups.
Campaign funding has also enabled major renovations and technology upgrades to the space-themed Nierman Challenger Learning Center. In the 15 years since it opened, more than 100,000 students and teachers have experienced the thrill, strategy and teamwork involved in human spaceflight at this unique educational facility, consisting of a NASA-inspired Mission Control, Space Station simulator & mission briefing room.
