San Diego--The Fleet Science Center is excited to announce the two-year anniversary of 52 Weeks of Science, the popular science learning program in the community of Logan Heights and Barrio Logan. The announcement of the two-year anniversary in Logan Heights and Barrio Logan also coincides with the expansion of the program into the San Diego community of Clairemont.

52 Weeks of Science is a collaborative program that connects the community with local scientists and organizations that have an interest in giving back through STEM education. The partner scientists and organizations offer free science events hosted by community organizations, schools and parks.

Since the program's inception in October 2015, more than 7,5000 people have participated in the neighborhood science events. The network of collaborating organizations partnering with the neighborhoods of Barrio Logan and Logan Heights has increased from 30 partners at the outset to more than 60 different science, cultural, educational and community partners today.

52 Weeks of Science is holding a special Two-Year Anniversary Celebration for the Barrio Logan and Logan Heights program on Wednesday, September 20, 3-6:30 p.m. at Dolores Magdaleno Memorial Recreation Center. The family-friendly event features a science fair with raffles, music, hands-on activities, demonstrations and other surprises!

Other events that 52 Weeks of Science is planning in Barrio Logan and Logan Heights this month include Engineering Craft Beer on September 9 at Border X Brewing. Border X brewmasters will share the science behind the different stages of brewing beer. This workshop will set the stage for a seasonal brew made in collaboration with 52 Weeks of Science.

Later this month is the Physics of Fidget Spinners. Learn how a fidget spinner can help you explore the laws that shape our universe ... without having to worry about your spinner getting confiscated.

52 Weeks of Science is also excited to expand to the community of Clairemont.

Events in the first month explore the themes of health and nutrition. Events will kick off with a Salad and Smoothie Social on September 1 at Clairemont High School. The social will provide an introduction to local health and nutrition organizations and an opportunity to learn all about the STEM taking place in the community.

On September 9, 52 Weeks of Science in Clairemont hosts The Science of Movement with Christi Iacono, owner of In Rhythms Yoga, and Mike Borders, physical therapist, as they teach the fundamentals of a healthy spine and the science and kinesiology in the practice of yoga.

Also as part of the kick-off month, 52 Weeks of Science in Clairemont will explore The Science of Cooking on September 27, hosted by Joseph Provost, author of "The Science of Cooking: Understanding the Biology and Chemistry Behind Food and Cooking."

In the future, 52 Weeks of Science will serve the community of Clairemont by partnering with such organizations as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, Urban Corps., The Energy Coalition, USD Department of Mathematics and multiple STEM-related departments from UCSD.

"We're very excited about what we have accomplished this past year and what lies ahead for 52 Weeks of Science," said Daniel Aguirre, program manager of 52 Weeks of Science. "The Barrio Logan and Logan Heights community has been so supportive of the program and are really beginning to take ownership of the programming. We're excited to partner with the Clairemont community as well. They have their own unique version of the program, centered around monthly themes. It's a wonderful expression of how important it is for communities to have STEM learning opportunities all year long."

"52 Weeks of Science is really about community," said Dr. Steve Snyder, CEO of the Fleet Science Center. "Our Logan Heights and Barrio Logan partners have been so successful at raising awareness of STEM education and we're looking forward to working with our new partners in Clairemont. By working together, we can leverage the innovative programs that are already happening in the neighborhood and create rich environments for science enjoyment, teaching and learning for all residents."
