GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked the World is Almost Here! Media Are Invited to Meet Exhibition Creator HP NEWQUIST for a Sneak Peek at Its Installation!

What:

Starting December 11, there’s  a unique and unparalleled media opportunity at the Fleet—as National Guitar Museum Executive Director and founder, HP Newquist, oversees the installation of our new exhibition: GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked the World. Newquist created it, and along with Fleet Exhibits Director Paul Siboroski, will be happy to grant a sneak peek—and personal tour—of this amazing exhibition as it takes shape in the Upstairs Rotunda Gallery, prior to its West Coast premiere on Friday, December 20. “The guitar is the most enduring icon in American history,” says Newquist, an award-winning author, documentary director, broadcast producer, and the former Editor-in-Chief of GUITAR Magazine. “It has been around longer than baseball, basketball, soft drinks and sports cars.” With 60+ guitars and 100+ historical artifacts, visitors are immersed in the heart of music through the powerful lens of science. How do you set up a Guinness Record-breaking 43.5 foot-long guitar? Discover how the selection of different materials and strings, fused with electromagnetism and amplification, create an elaborate device that has revolutionized music. Learn all about the science of pitch and tone. This is a rare chance to experience how the pieces of an exhibition are put together to create the science, sound, history and cultural impact of the guitar from the man who gathered instruments ranging from the rare and antique to the wildly popular and innovative—along with hands-on interactives, models, touchscreens, performance video, audio, stunning images and photographs. IMAX® FILMS:

MYSTERIES of the UNSEEN WORLD provides you with an incredible view of things that are normally too slow, too fast, too small or too vast for the human eye to see. The film's innovative use of high-speed and time-lapse photography, electron microscopy and nanotechnology result in larger-than-life images that are stunning to see on the 76-foot Heikoff Giant Dome Theater screen. From the powerful thread of a spider’s web to the slow-motion shatter and splatter of a dropped pitcher of milk, Mysteries of the Unseen World invites you to look at the world in a whole new way. Narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Deep Sea––Embark on a gorgeous underwater expedition with Del Mar’s own veteran underwater filmmakers and ocean explorers, Howard and Michele Hall. You will be transported below the ocean surface to swim with some of the planet’s most unique, dangerous and colorful creatures, from the unusual Wolf Eel to the Giant Pacific Octopus. Moviegoers come face to face with these underwater inhabitants to witness their peculiar and amazing behavior as they rely on one another for survival. Narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, with an original score by Danny Elfman.

Adventures In Wild California illustrates how the beauty and majesty of the state’s many wild places help inspire California’s unique cultural and adventurous spirit. Audiences will careen down an icy, steep face with snowboarders; swim through the ocean with otters and their surrogate human mother; excavate the very heart of a 300-foot tall Sequoia with botanists, and emerge from under the spray of one of California’s biggest, surfable waves. Profiled in Wild California are some of the state’s most passionate adventurers, including skysurfer Troy Hartman, captured on film by freefall cameraman Joe Jennings; snowboarder Bryan Iguchi; Sequoia tree scientist Dr. Stephen Sillett; Maverick’s surfer Jeff Clark; sea otter aquarist Sue Campbell; and bald eagle conservationist Peter Sharpe.

Locals and tourists alike will find the majesty of the Golden State awe-inspiring. From making a daring aerial landing on a bald eagle’s next, to walking high above the waters of San Francisco Bay with ironworkers who perform upkeep on the Golden Gate Bridge, audiences will be transported to many of the state’s natural and man-made wonders on a virtual expedition. The heart-pounding imagery recreates an experience of California’s furthest edges few will ever have first-hand.
