Shannon's story of her journey from Olympic gymnast to Mompreneur to cancer survivor will inspire and motivate anyone! Regardless of their profession, all women struggle to find time for themselves. Shannon wants to empower women with the knowledge and education they need to make informed decisions on health and fitness for themselves and for their family. As our new Unseen Science exhibition opens, think small … really, really small! Unseen Science invites you to peek at the big science of nanotechnology, view molecules through augmented reality and look at science in a whole new way. Mysteries of the Unseen World is a new giant screen film adventure that takes audiences on an extraordinary journey into unseen worlds and hidden dimensions beyond our normal vision to uncover the mysteries of things too fast, too slow, too small or simply invisible. ISON IS COMING! Learn More and Be Ready at The Sky Tonight: Comets, on Wednesday, NOVEMBER 6! Then Check the Sky to See If Any Are Falling!

 

What:

The year 2013 has been a good one for comets. We saw Comet PanStarrs in the Spring, and Comet ISON is promising to be spectacular in the late Fall sky. But what are comets? Where do they come from? What are they made of? Join us to learn all about comets! Our popular monthly live planetarium show of the sky in SD that night reaches a new level of stunning full-color visuals and incredibly realistic simulations of cosmic phenomena with our new state-of-the-art digital projection system. A professional astronomer leads backyard stargazers through the universe. Weather and operational requirement permitting, the SD County Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors on the Prado in Balboa Park. This is a separate event held on the first Wednesday of each month.

Join Jim Thomas, Intrepid Author and Explorer Expert, at SENIOR MONDAY on NOVEMBER 4 To Delve Into the Secrets of Lewis & Clark’s: Great Journey West!

 

What:

Author and Fleet favorite Jim Thomas shares his extensive knowledge about The Lewis & Clark Expedition, then seniors watch the IMAX© film Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West. Thomas, in full period garb, details the journey’s complications and the intriguing, dangerous and little-known hardships the explorers endured. Thomas gained an intense interest in the Lewis and Clark expedition after reading about Sacagawea. He continued to research Lewis and Clark, but finding that the available information was quite dry, took it upon himself to embellish the hard facts from the journals with creative dialogue to keep his readers’ interest. Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West re-creates the journey that shaped a nation and explores the great hardships and incredible scenery the explorers encountered. The first Monday of the month, seniors 65+ enjoy the Science Center exhibits, a lecture and a Giant Dome Theater show at a discount!

We May Not Understand the Reasons for Oarfish Washing Ashore, But You Can Learn All About Other Denizens of the DEEP SEA Through November in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater.

 

What:

As we saw this week in the news, there are mysteries in the depths of the ocean that we may never understand until they wash up on our shores. Meantime, join Del Mar’s own veteran underwater filmmakers and ocean explorers Howard and Michele Hall to learn what you can on a Deep Sea underwater expedition. Swim below the ocean surface with some of the planet’s most unique, dangerous and colorful creatures, from the unusual Wolf Eel to the Giant Pacific Octopus. Come face to face with these underwater inhabitants and witness their peculiar and amazing behavior as they rely on one another for survival. “Wacky Weather” delves into Measuring Weather, Wet Weather, Sunny Science and Winter Wonderland. Preschoolers age 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scientific wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scientific questioning. As families create objects that move, push, displace or achieve velocity in the Tinkering Studio, we will analyze which aspects of performance are mechanically inclined. Special recognition will go to those who cobble together the most impressive mechanical creations!

NOVEMBER 2/9/16/23/30—Family Science Saturdays:  Speed.  In its simplest expression, speed can be seen as the rate at which an object covers distance: a car on a track, a plane through the air, or an object falling to the ground. We in the Tinkering Studio will be paying close attention to see who amongst our many visitors can generate the greatest speed in whatever endeavor they choose, from the many arrays that we supply. Activities included with admission. 1PM–3PM

 

NOVEMBER 6—Origami with Bruce Gemmell. The traditional art of paper folding has evolved into a venerable modern art form with solid foundations in math and science. A flat sheet of material is transformed into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Tinkering Studio Coordinator Gemmell has taught architecture both in the US and abroad. This event will be held the first Wednesday of each month. 4PM–7PM. Participation is included with gallery admission.

 

NOVEMBER 7—Exploring Ethics explores Neuroscience and Video Games. Video games are increasingly in the news. Rapid advances in brain research are also enabling neuroscientists, in collaboration with game developers, to develop games that contribute to observable educational and therapeutic innovations. While potentially beneficial, it is important to ask about the ethical and social implications associated with the merging of neuroscience with game development and use. In conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet welcomes guests to encounter science from an ethical viewpoint, brings together community leaders of various backgrounds to examine current scientific issues from diverse perspectives and invites the public to explore with them how science can best serve society. 5–7PM; William & Grayson Boehm Community Forum at the Reuben H. NOVEMBER 18—NASA Launch: MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution)—First mission devoted to the understanding of the Martian upper atmosphere. It will analyze the role that loss of atmospheric gas to space played in changing the Martian climate through time.
