What:

All UAV Day visitors can enter to win an AR.Drone2.0, the one-of-a kind quadcopter developed by French company Parrot and featured in our exhibit, On the Fly: Technology Takes Off. The Fleet celebrates San Diego’s innovative UAV and multi-rotor community with local organizations that will display small multi-rotor aircraft, custom and commercial UAVs and autonomous RC planes and helicopters for hobbyists, along with videos all about UAV technology and the myriad applications they are capable of. There will be brief lectures on the history and development of unmanned aircraft history and its civil integration, current FAA restrictions on commercial usages for UAVs and the positive applications being developed for UAVs and quadcopters.  Join in a workshop and learn how to build your own quad, take a pilot lesson on a quad simulator and see how they function in an interactive mini wind tunnel. Dr. Eric Frost of the SDSU Homeland Security Grad Program is in Mexico now, using UAVs to help reestablish communications just destroyed in Hurricane Miguel, and will share his stories. See the new documentary Civilian Drones—Search and Rescue, about the Texas group doing recovery work in the desert for the past ten years. The Air Law Institute is sponsoring a group of kids from an Old Town  engineering scholarship program, who plan on building a scale model of NASA’s Ikhana unmanned aircraft!

Participants thus far include AUVSI San Diego, Air Law Institute, Innov8tive Designs, 3D Robotics, San Diego Wind Tunnel, Isis Copter, MultiRotor Systems, Go Professional Cases and San Diego Drone User Group. Our new exhibit, On the Fly: Technology Takes Off, has attracted a unique following with its fascinating display highlighting the unique characteristics of UAVs and how they fly, multiple daily performances by small-scale unmanned aerial vehicles and the chance for every visitor to apply the principles of aerodynamics to create their own aircraft. Join us to learn more about the constantly evolving uses of unmanned flight technology from our exhibit and, on October 6, from our experts in the field!

The Planetary Satellites Are Interesting Worlds in Their Own Right. THE SKY TONIGHT Explores the Moons of the Solar System on OCTOBER 2!

Did you know that there are moons of the solar system that have atmospheres? Geysers? Subsurface oceans of water? Join us in October as we explore our own Moon and other moons of the solar system. Our popular monthly live planetarium show of the sky in SD that night reaches a new level of stunning full-color visuals and incredibly realistic simulations of cosmic phenomena with our state-of-the-art digital GSX™ projection system. A professional astronomer leads backyard stargazers through the universe. Weather and operational requirement permitting, the SD County Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors on the Prado in Balboa Park. This is a separate event held on the first Wednesday of each month

EXPLORING ETHICS in La Jolla: Why Are We Losing the War Against Cancer? Learn the Truth in Small Doses on OCTOBER 2 at Scripps Research Institute Auditorium!

 

What:

Despite billions spent every year, no cure yet exists for the scourge of cancer. Why not? Acclaimed author Clifton Leaf will address that vexing issue, which dates back to antiquity, in a free lecture presented by the Center for Ethics in Science & Technology, in partnership with UCSD Extension.

Leaf, author of The Truth in Small Doses: Why We’re Losing the War on Cancer—And How to Win It, opens the Ethics Center’s 2013–14 Speaker Series with “Lessons From a One-Eyed Surgeon,” a reference to a famed Irish surgeon whose inspiring story Leaf recounts in his book. Leaf, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 15, believes that given the enormous resources devoted to the cause (as much as $16 billion a year in the U.S. alone), that we should be much closer to a permanent and sustainable cure.

Seniors Will Start Their Science Immersion a Bit Earlier on Monday, OCTOBER 7, When Senior Monday Moves to a New Time––and Into the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater! Check Out the Deep Sea Challenge Lecture Beginning at 10:30AM, and IMAX® film Deep Sea at 12noon!

 

What:

Set your alarm clocks as our Senior Monday lecture will now begin at 10:30AM, with the film at noon. There will still be snacks courtesy of ScholarShare, but in the theater lobby, as we have moved the entire morning into the theater to accommodate the overflow crowds the program has drawn.

On March 26, 2012, James Cameron (National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence) became the first person in history to reach the Earth's deepest known point as a solo pilot, successfully piloting the DeepSea Challenger nearly 36,000 feet to the Mariana Trench. Expedition Team member Bruce Sutphen will give a brief overview of the technical elements, fabrication, assembly and operation of the DeepSea Challenger submersible. San Diegan Sutphen has 25 years in scaled modeling and technical project management, including composite, design, fabrication, hydrodynamic stabilization and subsea robotic programs. As U.S. Project Manager for DeepSea Challenge and a member in the successful dives to the Mariana and New Britain Trench, his responsibilities ranged from running the scaled-model vehicle dynamic stability testing to managing the U.S. composite development, Lower Pod robotics fabrication, including the Lander Systems. The first Monday of the month, seniors 65+ enjoy the Science Center exhibits, a lecture and a Giant Dome Theater show at a discount! Please note new time & price!

SEPTEMBER 28—Family Science Saturdays––Bridges

Tinkering Studio Coordinator Bruce Gemmell is an architect who will share his knowledge of building bridges. Learn the fascinating history and nature of bridges, the integral concepts underlying their construction and the various types of bridges in common uses today. Challenge Saturday, the last Saturday of each month, will culminate in two visitor contests. Build bridges to cross our challenging chasm and compete in an ultimate strength challenge to see whose bridge will support the most weight OR explore the ratio of strength to load-bearing capability (or whose bridge can support the most times its own weight). Activities included with admission. 1PM–3PM

 

Now–OCTOBER 6––Young Scientists session 1 “Exploring Earth” will delve into Water Wonders and Awesome Animals. Preschoolers age 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scientific wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scientific questioning. Four 4-week sessions run monthly. OCTOBER 2—Origami with Bruce Gemmell. The traditional art of paper folding has evolved into a venerable modern art form with solid foundations in math and science. A flat sheet of material is transformed into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Tinkering Studio Coordinator Gemmell has taught architecture both in the US and abroad. This event will be held the first Wednesday of each month. 4PM–7PM. Participation is included with gallery admission.

OCTOBER 7–8—Astronomy Event: Draconids Meteor Shower—Meteor shower that will be visible after 12am. Shower originates out of the constellation Draco. Remnants of Comet 21P Giacobini–Zinner.

 

OCTOBER 9—Astronomy Event: Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation

 

OCTOBER 10–NOVEMBER 3––Young Scientists session 2 “Astronomy Adventure” takes off to learn everything about the Inner Planets, Outer Planets, Moon and Stars and Rockets. Preschoolers age 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scientific wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scientific questioning. Four 4-week sessions run monthly. Limited to eight students per class. Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning. 9AM–10:30AM. Members $75, nonmembers $85.

 

OCTOBER 12—ASTRONOMY DAY at the Fleet. A variety of programs and workshops will include a Public Challenger Mission and Saturday Science Club for Girls (additional fees for each; see below for details). Console operator and amazing Fleet photographer Mary Anderson hosts a Night Sky Photography workshop, free to the public during the day (time tbd); and if interest indicates, an evening night sky photography workshop as well. Upstairs at the E-Bar, the public is invited to join in on the Lunar Craters Activity from 10AM–3PM, or check out Dry Ice Comet Demos downstairs at 11AM & 1PM. Most activities free with admission. 10AM–6PM

 

OCTOBER 12—Saturday Science Club for Girls: Reach for the Stars! Search for constellations and explore the mysteries of the Milky Way. Investigate our closest neighbors in the solar system and other celestial objects light years away! Girls in grades 5–8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. 12 noon–2PM; members $12, nonmembers $14; must pre-register by calling (619) 238-1233 x806.

 

OCTOBER 12—Public Nierman Challenger Mission “Return to the Moon.” You, your friends and your family are invited to take the ultimate trip by experiencing our realistic Mission Control and Space Station simulators! This two-hour program introduces you to the teamwork, technology and drama involved in space travel. In the year 2015, astronauts are on their way back to the moon to stay! Navigating their way into lunar orbit, participants launch a probe and analyze a variety of data to select a site for a permanent moon base. Ages 10 and up. Challenger: members: $15/person, nonmembers: $20/person; 12noon–2PM

 

OCTOBER 12—Astronomy Event: International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN). Thanks to intriguing science results and beautiful images from recent lunar missions, the Moon tantalizes both scientists and the public with its mysteries. Now in its fourth year, InOMN provides the public with an opportunity to view and learn about Earth's nearest neighbor. The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) mission is set to join the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) at the Moon just prior to InOMN 2013.

 

OCTOBER 18—Astronomy Event: Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

 

OCTOBER 19—Kids Free STEM program: Hidden Power. You’ve got the power! Come to the Fleet and participate in an array of electrifying activities that highlight concepts of energy, electricity generation and efficiency. These Hidden Power activities are fun for the whole family, from youngsters to seniors. Learn more about energy materials and how they’re used, and find out about the invisible forces at work that power our world. All ages can head to the Tinkering Studio to channel your repressed inventor and go wild with FrankenToys! What mysterious creations will arise as you take apart, mix and match and build previously unimaginable creatures and contraptions?
