Pokémon Go and Augmented Reality

In a few years, we are sure that we will have virtual reality, allowing us to escape into a land of fantasy and illusion. For now, as a sort of small first step, there is Pokémon Go, a game that has been reconfigured into a high-tech sport for all using augmented reality. Augmented reality is a live view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are “augmented” or supplemented by a sound, video, graphic or GPS data. The Pokemon Go app, let’s you take sneak peak at what the future will bring us when it comes to truly immersive experiences.

On Saturday, September 10, your Girl Scout is invited to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center's Girl Scouts Sleepover. She will have the opportunity to explore mind-boggling Illusions, the science behind how human cells are formed, the importance of water conservation and more in our eight interactive exhibit galleries.

This event is open to Girl Scouts between the ages of 6 to 13.

Science doesn’t just live in a lab. It surrounds you everywhere, no matter where you are. We believe the exploration of science has the power to transform and inspire you.

This year, Science Is Everywhere, our 2016 annual fundraiser, aims to encourage San Diegans to discover the science all around them through a series of science photo challenges. The challenges were conducted on social media (through the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages), inspiring San Diegans to find everything from fractals to bubbles.

Best View of Mars in a Decade

During the last weeks of May and the first weeks of June, Mars will be bright and quite noticeable in the evening and early morning sky. In fact, this will likely be the best view you'll have of the planet in a decade! The last time Mars was this bright was during the the Martian opposition of November 2005.

For the first time in a decade, five planets are visible with the naked eye at the same time. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be together in the pre-dawn sky starting Wednesday, January 20, 2016.
