THE GREATEST PLACES

From oceans of sand to frozen deserts, Earth's most dynamic landscapes fill the giant Nanoseam™ Dome screen with color and contrast. THE GREATEST PLACES will take you on a geographical odyssey to seven amazing locations — including Greenland's giant icebergs, Tibet's Chang Tang Plateau, and Iguazu's immense waterfall — showcasing nature's enduring power with the majesty of IMAX®.

The film also blends trips to South America’s Amazon River with a foray to the world’s tallest sand dunes in the Namib Desert. You’ll take part in an expedition to the Okavango Delta in Botswana and to the island nation of Madagascar. The film explores beautiful landforms, amazingly complex ecosystems, and rich cultures of indigenous peoples that are inseparable from the places where they live. Though diversity is the theme of THE GREATEST PLACES, the film reveals that nature, and human nature, are what unify us as a planet.

The cinematic story of THE GREATEST PLACES begins 250 million years ago, when the planet’s “super continent” began splitting apart, unleashing the forces of tectonics, wind, water, and glaciers, all of which greatly affect the places to this day. The seven locations, judged to be some of Earth’s most geographically dynamic landscapes, are shown to their maximum power and beauty, whether it be their land forms, diverse wildlife, ecosystems, or their indigenous cultures and people. Scientific disciplines emphasized include biology, earth, environmental and social sciences, and physical and human geography.

Near the close of the film the narrator notes that, "life is a reflection of the landscape." THE GREATEST PLACES, filmed in seven remote, but magnificent, locales brilliantly demonstrates the awesome diversity of both landscape and life on Earth.

THE GREATEST PLACES is a presentation of the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, the Saint Louis Science Center, the Cincinnati Museum Center and Goto Optical Mfg. Co. Produced by Lobo and Associates and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films.

This film has been rated G for general audience.
Running time: 40 minutes.
