Summer Internships
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Summer Intern program?
The Fleet’s Summer Interns are high school students completing community service hours in one of three programs: Guest Services, Summer Camp, or Exhibits. Intern hours are scheduled during July and August. Download Summer Intern Application[152kb] Now!

Successful Summer Interns can apply for promoted positions (such as Lead Summer Camp Assistant) when returning for subsequent summers...

What do interns do?
Each of the three internship assignments has different job responsibilities.

Summer Camp Interns work with small groups of children during our summer camps. They set up materials, clean up, supervise, take attendance and facilitate small group experiments and activities.

Visitor Services Interns work with Science Center guests. They answer questions about Fleet programs and films, assist the box office and make sure everyone who comes to the Fleet has a wonderful time.

Exhibits Exploration Interns work with visitors at our Exploration Bar in the rotunda gallery. They help visitors of all ages with hands-on activities, set up materials and clean up.

Who can apply?
Any high school student who is at least fourteen years old and has completed one year of high school science can apply.

How do I apply?

  1. Download and fill out summer intern application.
  2. Have a teacher fill out the Teacher Recommendation form.
  3. Send the completed application (signed by parent) and recommendation to the Fleet via mail or fax before the May 15th deadline.
  4. When the completed application is received you will be invited to attend an interview/activity session in May.

What happens at the interview/activity session?
At the session we will get to know you by asking you a few questions about your experience. You will also complete a small group science activity similar to the ones we do in Summer Camp and at the Exploration Bar.

Who gets selected?
Since we generally have more applicants than space available in the program, interns are selected based upon completeness and quality of their application, teacher recommendation and performance during the interview and activity session.

How much time is required?
Time requirements vary by assignment.

Summer Camp interns must complete two camps (45 hours) but many sign up for more. Camps are 20 hours each. They must be available Monday-Friday 8:30-1pm or 12-4:30 for each camp they are scheduled.

Visitor Services and Exhibit Exploration Interns must work one or two 3-hour shifts per week for 7 weeks in July and August. A minimum of 21 hours is required.

What sort of perks do Summer Interns receive?
Summer Interns get to complete their community service at the Science Center and meet lots of other interns who have similar interests. They also receive:

  • free admission to IMAX films
  • free guest passes for our exhibits and films for their friends
  • Summer Intern uniform t-shirt
  • Completion certificate and letter
  • Community Service hours and a resource for future letters of recommendation
