What determines your eye color, straight or curly hair texture, and blood type? It all comes down to DNA! For this event, students will learn the basics of genetics, including how DNA affects the way traits are passed from one generation to the next. Students will also create interactive models and play detective to decode a series of genetic mysteries.

The Intertidal Zone: Where Land Meets Sea

What is it about the intertidal zone—the area that is above water at low tide and underwater at high tide—that makes it so incredibly diverse? This event will explore the unique characteristics of this habitat and learn how marine invertebrates adapt to its extreme conditions. Working as a team, students will gain an understanding of the extraordinary dynamics of an ecosystem found right here along the California coast!

Stop Motion Movie Making

Discover the basics of stop-motion animation by working in two-person teams to make an animated movie. Teams will use materials such as construction paper, foam, Legos and other props to create subjects for their movies. The activity will start by brainstorming ideas and creating storyboards, then use the kid-friendly Stop Motion Studio app to create frames, add sound and produce a final movie.
