We All Scream for Ice Cream!

Beat the heat with a sweet treat! Craveology is now serving soft serve ice cream with over a dozen ways to customize your favorite guilty pleasure. Don't miss out on our Magic Color Changing Spoons!

Why do these spoons change color? They are infused with a substance called leuco dyes. Leuco dyes are microencapsulated into drops that are three to five micrometers in size. That's about 0.00004 inches! At lower temperatures, leuco dyes remain in a solid state and reflect light and color. As the solvent warms, the colorant and the acid in the dyes separate and there's no visible color. (Sound familiar? Leuco dyes are also used in cans of Coors Light, which is why the mountains turn blue when the beer is cold!)

Sure, a color changing spoon is a fun way to enjoy ice cream, but there are more serious implications for thermochromism and leuco dyes in technology. This technology can be applied to create indicators for products that require constant temperature verification—likea refrigerator or an aquarium tank. Additionally, thermochromism can create safety indicators—such as a rubber duckie for a child's bath that tells you when the water is too hot.

Whether a serious or silly application, the inner child in us can't help but be fascinated by color changing polymers, which are made possible by thermochromism and leuco dyes. So grab some ice cream, kick your feet up and enjoy a tasty treat with a color changing spoon.
